Update: 8:50 – We are hearing that the Chronicle was wrong in the reports that the coaches were going to meet with Evans today. He did have his physical on Saturday but did not meet with coaches, as reported. We are being told that there is a strong chance the club will sign him, though. (03.20.06)
Update: 1:00 – The San Francisco Chronicle, reports free agent DE Demetric Evans (Redskins) was given a physical by the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, March 18, and likely will visit with coaches Monday, March 20. (03.19.06)
Jason LaCanfora, of the Washington Post, reports free agent DE Demetric Evans (Redskins) visited the San Francisco 49ers Friday, March 17, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and has two more visits planned next week.
Grade 56
Evans is an undersize defensive end who has average athletic ability, speed and quickness. He has decent upper strength and initial quickness off the ball. He will flash leverage and uses of hands at times. However, Evans lacks good explosion and suddenness off the ball. He plays too high; he has a narrow base and he has very average change of direction skills. He has poor use of hands, he can not disengage and he lets blockers get into his body. He lacks lower body strength to hold the point of attack when teams run at him. He does not have down the line closing speed and he has a difficulty, at times, locating the ball. He lacks good foot quickness and he is a step slow from making plays. As a pass rusher, he does not have edge rushing ability. He lacks the speed to turn the corner. He does not have a variety of pass rush moves. He is a bull rusher who gets engulfed by bigger and stronger offensive lineman. Overall, Evans is a try hard guy. He has an excellent work ethic but he does not have the specifics you are looking for at the position. He does not have a lot of upside to him and he is not special.

Before going into FA, Nolan said that there wouldn’t be any huge/big name FA aquisitions. He said we’d target a few midlevel signigns and a bunch of lower level signings. That being said I think we’re also watching the JP situation very closely (at least that’s what I hope).
Do you really expect us to trade away compensation that’s equivalent to a late first round pick, just to sign abraham to a huge contract?
Only a team that’s close to going deep in the play offs is going to take a risk on a player like that.
Honestly, why can’t people have some patience? It seems like everytime we try to bring someone in for depth, or even just to play special teams, someone has to spaz out. Usually a lot of people spaz out.

Great comment Dave. Some of these fans sound Redskins fans. They should look back in recent history and see that spending your money on big names will not translate into a Superbowl team.

The Seahawks, Eagles, and Patriots were already playoff teams. Thats why 1 or 2 players signed made a big difference, cause they already have the nucleus. If you want us to do something like that we would have to sign about 10 big name players to have that effect. And no one has the money for that.

The only position where we need experience is at QB to help Alex develop and we aren’t doing much in that area. I think the 49ers aren’t doing much to improve. The best moved we made was the Lloyd trade and the signing of Bryant. We already lost Carter and posible Peterson, they were OUR first round picks years ago they are in the prime on their careers, they have experience, they know the system…Peterson is asking for price is ridiculus but since we didn’t throw the money towards signig Carter what choice do we have? What happen to the theory of saving cap money to sign OUR freeagents. We have 10 picks for this year draft we can get depth there, but we needed solid proven players like Bentley,Hope, Whiterspoon, Givens, we miss out on them but there are others like Putzier, Dyson, Boulware. I hope York would sell the team to someone who cares about winning rather than to make a profit, But if he would spend some money to make this team better he would be making money, getting a new stadium etcs…

Smith Excited about his New Mentor
Friday, March 17, 2006
By: Chrissy Mauck
Last fall, rookie quarterback Alex Smith caught the Cowboys Monday night game against the Washington Redskins and watched as Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin were inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Fame. Months later he still remembers Aikman’s speech.
“I remember Troy talking that night about how they had so much talent but the biggest thing in bringing everything together was having the genius mind of Coach (Norv) Turner who understood how to best use them,” said Smith. “He spoke so highly of Turner and I remember thinking to myself that it must have been pretty cool to have a coach and a mentor like that in your career.”
Later in the year, the rookie received a message from Aikman. From one former first overall pick to the next, Aikman simply wished the rookie well and gave him a few pointers on how to deal with all of the pressures involved both on and off the field.
“He went through a lot of bumps his first two years being a number one pick,” said Smith. “He lost his first 11 games and took his lumps and so I think he definitely went through some rough times. He left a really long message for me and I remember thinking how nice it was. It was probably the best message I got that really put into perspective what it is like to be the number one pick.”
Aikman credited Turner for his growth and production in Dallas, and recently walked that talk with his announcement that his former offensive coordinator will present him into the Hall of Fame this summer in Canton. That mentor/pupil relationship is one Smith hopes to see repeated in San Francisco as he heads into his sophomore NFL season under the direction of Turner.
“He’s been around the NFL and had so much success and has been around so many quarterbacks,” said Smith of Turner. “In hearing the way Troy talks about Norv, it’s obvious he was instrumental in helping him to develop as a quarterback and I hope that we can all benefit from that here. He’s very positive. He’s laid back and he’s a teacher. He tries to explain things and that’s helpful especially because all of the quarterbacks here are young and at the early stages of our careers.”
Sandwiched around Smith’s trip to the Super Bowl and Turner’s trip to the Pro Bowl with Aikman for a special Hall of Fame dinner, last year’s first-round pick, along with quarterbacks Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett, began logging hours in the film room with Turner and quarterbacks coach Jim Hostler.
“We’ve watched a lot of film and talked through the offense he plans on running,” said Smith. “We’ve studied plays and listened to him explain things and gone through the progressions.”
With the coaches ironing out the terminology, it took a few weeks before Smith and crew actually received a small playbook to get started. From what he’s seen so far on paper, Smith believes Turner’s offense will stretch the field more than last year and allow for a more aggressive styled attack
“When I watch myself last year, I feel like I played pretty passive,” said Smith. “I think because we were so young on offense, we all kind of played like that. I think this offense will open it up a little more and allow us to cut loose.”
Despite the extra studying and having to pick up on a new offense, Smith said he’s looking forward to the fresh start.
“I think no matter what offense I was in I was going to take my lumps last year,” said Smith. “I think that was just par for the course for a rookie. I think I’ve gotten a lot of those rookie mistakes behind me. Of course, I look forward to an off-season of not having to learn a new offense but at the same time, it’s a fresh start for this offense with a guy who has been around so many quarterbacks, knows different styles and knows how to tailor them to his players.”
With monumental expectations awaiting him this fall, for now, Smith just wants to please his new coach, which might require a return call to Aikman for a few more tips from the soon-to-be Hall of Famer.

Honestly I think Darrel has some valid points. We all want SF to win and everyone keeps telling us (has told us for the last 10 years) to be patient. I agree that FA spending hasnt really worked out for the Redskins in the past, but they did get pretty far in the playoffs this past year and I wonder what will be said about their strategy if they do go on to the SB this coming year? Everyone quotes Philly as one of the teams that we are trying to model, but even before their one year SB run, they signed quite a few big name FA’s. T.O. is the one everyone specifically remembers, but I think they brought in Corey Simon, and brought back Hugh Douglas. I may be wrong about those two guys specifically but there were quite a few permier FA’s brought in just before their one year SB run. In my opinion NE is just a freak of nature, with a genius coach. But for every NE and for every Philly model you can pull out there, we can match them with 1 or 2 teams like Arizona and Clevland, who have picked up FA’s “selectively” and tried to rebuild through the draft, and only now after 20 some odd years are they MAYBE coming back into their own. I would like to see a more proactive, more intelligent approach to getting back to winning than the model AZ and CLE have used.

Gelb72, you do know it took us over 30 years before we won our first championship. So this 10 years crap means nothing. We have been contenders up untill 2002, so I don’t know were you got that 10 years either. The thing that you keep missing is that PHI, and NE already had a playoff team before they signed those big players, it’s not like they were in last place then signed them and jumped to first.
The best example we should use is the Bengals. After years of sucking they bring in M. levy. He doesn’t make big signings andhe first had to clear house before he could bring in his players. He worked through the draft and made smart pickups in the FA but not BIG NAME pick ups, they got rid of a Pro Bowl LB, but now they are set up for years of sucses and maybe a Super Bowl run in 1 or 2 years.
The 49ers will get better and I say will make the playoffs in 2007.
finally remember Patience is a virtue
2 days after the fact.Dave said:
Take it one step further. Don’t just look at the Eagles and Redskins, look at all the teams that have participated in or won the SB over the last 6 years. Every single one of them built through the draft. Barely any of them made any big FA signings. If they did, they were few and far in between. Not to mention theres a difference between big and HUGE. Some of the FA’s signed this year were signed to some ridiculously huge contracts.
From all those teams that made it to the superbowl, a lot of them even lost key players.
This isn’t the old NFL that some of you guys keep thinking this is. You can’t just spend money left and right on all kinds of players and expect to win. Those decisions will catch up with you.
Beyond that football is a team game, and there’s something to be said about good coaching, chemistry, teamwork, and passion/determination/love for the game.
2 days after the fact.Darrel said:
Everyone knows that the right way 2 build your team is around a good draft every year, for financial and personnel reasons. All I’m simply stating is if we suffered through these rough recent years due to cap problems, why r we still approaching the FA market n a passive mode. Not 2 say go splurge on pricey FA’s, but 1 or 2 would be helpful in many ways to a number of people. A couple high-profile names(or 1) would put butts in the seats in brisk Candlestick, while hopefully providing leadership and productivity to our team. The main problem is the lack of talent, and outragaous contracts of this year’s FA pool. But we are losing guys as well as not signing anyone on the market, how can that work? Our division should be much better not including the SB hawks, r u really comfortable with our lack of productive moves so far this off season? AB will be a stud this year, if Battle can stay healthy( which he will)!! Go Niners!!

Do we really want this dude, I mean c’mon why waste a roster spot? Sign Aaron Brooks for ONE year, that gives Alex a lil time 2 catch his breath. Because if we aren’t gonna address the O, besides obviously through the draft, a veteran QB would cost a few million but its effect would be priceless. Nobody is saying lets b the skins of the west, but 1 or 2 high profile FA’s that wants 2 be a part of this resurrection and erection of our beloved Niners!!

I remember when the Pats won their first SB they were considered a team of nobodies that beat a team with stars(the Rams). So stop sulking about a signing as if we are wasting tons of money.
1 day after the fact.Jorge said:
Thats the problem none want to go to a rebuilding team. They want to sign to a team that they think can make a run at the SB. So these “High Profile” players won’t come to the 49ers. Also these high profile players want about 8-10 million a year. So if we go out and sign them then we have no more room to sign anyone else. We are about 17 million under the cap. So yeah if we would go out and sign 2 high profile players we would not only suck, but be in cap trouble come draft day.

Seems like Nolan is looking for mostly depth in FA. NOT STAR CALIBER PLAYERS. He’ll get those building in the draft. The niners will be a team the steadily improves to a decent team. That is when they’ll look to sign a few key FA. That’s been the plan all along, why would he change because we have a little cap space. The Eagles have been one of the best teams the last 5 years (injury riddle T.O. mess of last season not included) and they also always have a lot of cap space free.
