The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that WR Bryan Gilmore has signed as an unrestricted free agent.

Gilmore (6-0, 193) is a six-year NFL veteran who played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins. He has played in 55 games with 13 starts and has caught 38 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns.

Gilmore is reunited with 49ers wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, who coached Gilmore in Arizona from 2001-03 and in Miami in 2004.

So far two visits. Two signings. Niners are holding true to what we were told. They visit, they sign.

Round 1, Pick 6

Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland

The smart money seems to lean more and more towards Davis being the pick here. For my own money, I would be happy with Davis, or Michael Huff, or D’Brickashaw Ferguson, or Mario Williams. It’s a dead horse at this point, but we’ll beat it again: the 49ers desperately need offensive playmakers, and Davis is one of the best in this draft, and maybe the best of the WRs/TEs. The development of Alex Smith is the key to the future of this franchise, and a weapon like Davis can go a long way in making that development smooth. The TE is the new vogue position in the NFL, and Davis has the athleticism, speed, desire, work ethic, and skills to be the greatest at the position when all is said and done.

Remember when you aquired your very first car? (If you’re from the bay area, disregard this metaphor because likely daddy bought you a new beamer.) But if yours was anything like mine, it was a turd. The power windows didn’t work, the power sunroof was stuck open, it didn’t start in the rain, the tires were long past bald, and it was rusted halfway up either door. Generally speaking, if I wanted to go out on the weekends, I had to perform some miraculous act of mechanical black magic, usually during foul weather and always outside.

Update: 8:44 – It seems Peterson and his agents are looking for $20 million guaranteed. We are hearing the Niners probably would not even pay half of that.

“That’s a good question. I don’t want to necessarily say that what’s going on has heightened it, but there is the possibility we can get him back. I don’t know why, but I have a sense of encouragement because all of the other things that have happened that he might be back. That’s why I don’t want to say much. I feel that way with some of the things that are happening. I would like to have JP back.”

We decided to dig a little deeper on this quote from Nolan. We are now hearing that the niners are drafting up a contract for Julian Peterson. After Carter signed with the Redskins, Nolan and Co. turned their attention to the linebacker corps. They solidified it by re-signing Brandon Moore at a very reasonable price. Now they are turning their attention to Peterson.
