03.13.06—I know what you’re thinking. What could possibly lead a grown man to make the title for an article about football with a lyric from a Shania Twain song? I wish I knew the answer. But just take comfort that I didn’t call it Man, I Feel Like A Woman.
The point of the title is simple: the state of panic that many 49er fans seem to be trapped in right now is overblown. It’s been running rampant for the last 2 days. “Oh, God, look at what everyone else is doing! We’re doomed!” Well my friends, relax and grab a smoke, because it ain’t that bad.
The St. Louis Rams have made several splashes in the free agent puddle, picking up LB Will Witherspoon from Carolina, DT La’Roi Glover from Dallas, and S Corey Chavous from Minnesota. Great. Witherspoon has all the appearances of a gamebreaker, but Chavous and Glover are both players that are on the downsides of their careers, and both were extremely overpaid. Meanwhile, Arizona made the biggest noise of all, landing Edgerrin James. Good for them. They had capable running backs last season (including a 2nd round pick in JJ Arrington) that accomplished nothing behind an inept offensive line. James will help, but the Cardinals had oodles of talent last season, and look where that got them.
I can understand the frustration many fans feel when they see big-name (though not necessarily big-play) players getting snatched up by other teams, particularly within the division. The 49ers were supposed to be one of the teams with loads of cap space, so why aren’t they grabbing players left and right?
I certainly don’t know the answer for sure, but the approach they’ve taken is pretty much exactly what I would do.
Slow down.
The Niners came into this offseason with some easily identifiable needs: LB (depending on the status of the free agents they themselves had), WR, S being chief among them. Obviously plenty of questions remain, but progress has been made. Derek Smith was re-signed to a very reasonable contract. Chris Hetherington was re-signed for essentially nothing. Joe Nedney, the team’s co-MVP was re-signed.
The major hangup for many seems to be the ”lateral” move of trading Brandon Lloyd and signing Antonio Bryant. And the many are right: it is in some ways a lateral move, even if you consider Bryant to be a superior player to Lloyd. The 49ers needed more talent at WR, and giving up your best WR seems like an unusual way to do that. But consider the deal as a whole. Antonio Bryant + a 3rd round draft choice in this year’s draft, plus an additional pick next season versus Brandon Lloyd? I’d like to think most people would prefer the former. The key to the whole scenario is the 3rd round pick.
My astute colleague JimmyPage points out:
The Niners currently hold the 6th, 37th, 68th and something like the 84th-86th picks on the first day. We may hold that extra 3rd to acquire an extra player. However, it could easily be used for ammo to move back up into the late first round for a player we covet.
According to the pick value chart:
37th + 68th = 22nd pick
37th + 84th = 26th pick
That’s going purely off the chart. And that could help us get Antonio Cromartie, Manny Lawson, or perhaps a receiver if we still have the need for it.
The 2006 Draft is by leaps and bounds the deepest draft I have ever seen. The extra Day 1 pick leaves the 49ers in a position to add another starting-caliber player, whether it be via trade-up or staying in place. Furthermore, based on the pick value chart, the “perhaps a receiver if we still have a need for it” can be filled by a Santonio Holmes or Chad Jackson if things shake out right.
I don’t want to give the impression that I think the 49ers’ Front Office is infallible. I certainly share some of the frustrations that many feel. The LB position is troubling to me, and it needs to be addressed in free agency, because “wasting” the 6th pick on AJ Hawk would be a sad resolution to a fixable problem. Brandon Moore must be re-signed. Ideally, either Julian Peterson or Andre Carter will be brought back (and as it happens, their price tag drops with each passing day). There are still quality free agents available at the position, and I would imagine that’s next on the list for Mike Nolan and Co.
But I do feel like this team is headed in a direction. I’m not 100% convinced it’s exactly the right direction, but it’s a direction, and that’s more than the 49ers have had in the past 5+ years. The team is extremely young, with plenty of room to grow, and a coach who by all appearances seems committed to seeing it through. So the work rolls on. From This Moment. You’re Still The One. I’m Gonna Getcha Good.
(weeps softly)

Totally agree here. I think it’s pretty obvious that the Niners are trying to build this team with a solid draft and SMART free agent signings. The Niners definitely have money to spend, but that doesn’t mean that the free agents available are the right fit for this team. It seems that many Niners fans haven’t learned the lessons of the past with signings like Gabe Wilkins and Antonio Langham. You don’t just sign guys and overpay them because they are there, you sign them only if they fit what you are trying to do.

I agree with this article. Next in line in fre agency is the Lb position. Or quite possibly a cb. Lavvar Arrington and CHarles Woodson are on my wishlist. Throw in Bradon Moore as well.

Agreed. The Niners can’t fix themselves by making one or two big splashes in free agency, they need depth. The best way to get that is through the draft and through mid-level free agent signings. The Lloyd trade was great in that regard. Watch: the free agent market will cool down as these hot and heavy teams use all their bonus money. A few key guys will stand out, and Niners will have the cap room to go after them. Later in the summer, some quality guys will get released as teams try to get under the cap to sign their draft picks. We’re in good shape.

I disagree with this article. I understand you are trying to be as much a fan as you can but this whole ordeal is now ridiculous. We are the 49ers (or at least used to be.) We are a Superbowl team, and our fans expect a SUPERBOWL every year not HOPE FOR MAKING THE PLAYOFFS IN THE NEAR FUTURE! Nolan is frankly a dumbass, and even more so is the our penny pinching owner York. Wanna know why we do not have one single big nme on our team? Because no one wants to be a “Nolan Guy” (And boy did that definition change upon the signing of Antonio Bryant!
2 hours after the fact.Last year the excuse was we had no cap. This year, we have over $20 million! If it were up to me, I would have taken Adam Archuletta, Lavar Arrington, and Lecharles Bently in this draft. Oh, and this realy kills me and I want you to think about it, why have we sucked the last 3 years? THE OFFENSIVE LINE! Nolan is just a defensively oriented Erickson who is years younger!
I know I am just throwing things out there and I apologize but I frankly hate our organization now. When players play for us, they come and go. What remains is the fans, the owners, and the legacy. York, since becoming the new owner, is an ass. The fans feel the way I feel, that the organization is utterly disappointing. The legacy, which once told of a team that contended for a superbowl every year, is gone. We are left with Mike Nolan and a huge capp with not so many great players left in free agency.
What are my future views? I know you think its early but Nolan must go. He is bad for us. We now sit in the toughest division in the NFL given the recent transactions. If the Niners are for real, and the team has not died, then there must be moves. NO TEAM OF ROOKIES! We started rebuilding 3 years ago, now we start all over again when we have enough money to make a huge impact NOW? We could have taken Jamal Lewis, Lavaar Arrington, Adam Archuletta, and a veteran offensive lineman (ANYONE AVAILABLE, like Mawae) and we’d be a superbowl contender with left over cap space! ADD IT UP! (In this scenario, Barlow can be trading with a 3rd round pick for a second round pick, we’d get A.J. Hawk so our D and O-Line would be awesome. But thats not happening. Lewis is gone as is Archuletta.
My prayers have left me here, sitting on the ground in this corner frustrated. I can only hope for a miracle. Best case scenario in my opinion? Sign Mawae, Aarington, and put Barlow in a trade for the acquisition of Javon Walker or add him with a second round pick for an early 1st round pick to get Vernon Davis. Also sign that Pittsburg safety, Hope. Draft D’Brikashaw Ferguson and if he’s not available we get A.J. Hawk. Resign Brandon Moore, if he will condone being a “Nolan Guy.” Add it all up, we will still have a lot of cap room left and we would be a playoff contender (but not yet the superbowl contender we had the ability to be.) But thats all a fantasy, a dream that faded away. In reality, nothing productive will happen and “Nolan’s boys,” who the media plays off as being chumps not knowing the meaning of football, will keep “rebuilding.” Sorry for the long post, I am out.

MJ is a dumbass, the niners dont need Archuleta or Jamal Lewis. Barlow needs to be traded leaving Gore the starting job. Then the pick up of Micheal bennet would give us a great back up. Then Chris Hope could be signed to play Free Safety because we need a free Safety not Archuleta who plays Strong Safety.
4 hours after the fact.MJ said:
Samra 119 it is you who is a dumbass. Michael Bennet? Are you stupid? We are trying to get better not worse! We are MUCH better off with Barlow than Bennett. But if you scroll up and read, one who implies intelligence, you would notice that I said nothing of a runningback in the last paragraph. Yes, once Barlow is traded Gore would be the man to go too. But hey smart one, one last thing you overlooked: WHO IS GOING TO BLOCK FOR WHOEVER IS RUNNINGBACK? WE HAVE NO O-LINE

As for your long post, your a dumb ass.
If we sign
Arrington
Archuletta
Bently
Mawae
Then we would be exactly were we were 2 years ago. In cap trouble and in last place again.
The Bryant, Moore signing were GREAT deals for significantly less. Moore who had about 30 more tacles and 1 more sack then Carter was signed for $8 million were as Carter was signed for $30. Tell me thats not a great deal.
The Redskins have tossed money to the top Free Agents since Snyder took over. How many Super Bowls have they won since. Huh zero, how about apperances, zero. The name of the players don’t mean jack shit. We also signed Bryant for significantly less then what Lloyd got. Another great deal. So I say we are 2-0 for the offseason.
FYI the packers signed both their DEs so expect them to sign AJ Hawk. So if the Saints sign Brees the draft will change significantly.

I don’t get it. Why would we take Archuletta when we have Parrish? Why would we take Jamal when he’s on the down? Why would we take Lavaar when the Ponsons represent him and he’d be just as expensive as JP. We might as well keep JP. Whatever you’re smoking, I want some of it. No way in hell Ferguson falls to us at pick #6 and if he did, even Nolan would take him. And Bennett is just as stupid as Jamal. Trade Barlow, keep Gore/Hicks, we just re-signed Moore, get another LB in the draft, pick up some O line guys and we’re set for continuing our rebuild. No way we’re contenders with your rambling ideas.

People like the guy above me is why the landscape of the NFL is wrong. What you dont understand is that you dont need those big name free agents to succeed in the NFL. Look at what the Patriots and Redskins have done in the last 6 years and youll see what I mean. A few years ago the Redskins went out with all that money, picked the wonderboy Arrington, drafted Samuels, signed all of those lame RFA ie:Chad Morton, the kicker from San Diego and a couple of other guys who was supposed to put them in the hunt. Brunnell, portis, coles. And they signed them for big contracts. They are in the same position now as they were three years ago, but now they are signing round 3 of wasted money with guys like lloyd, carter, archuleta, randle el. Now look at what the Patriots have done, I really cant think of any high priced free agents thay have picked up in the past. Dillon was a draft day pickup. Shoot I think they won a superbowl with kevin faulk and antwain smith running the ball. To my knowledge the biggest FA signing was Rodney Harrison and I believe he came cheap. They just seem to find a guy and plug him in when he is a lot cheaper and is not gaining a whole lot of attention. And very good drafting habits. So when people spout off about the 49ers not picking (wasting money)up any high profile players I just laugh at what they have to say because I have faith in what Mike Nolan and Scot Mclaughlin are doing. The guy above me probably liked the job Carmen Policy did. By the way are you serious? sign Mawae, hes like 36 and with bad knees. I dont want to sound so negative but the money these teams are throwing at mediocre players is crazy. I do feel that they need to get Julian Peterson back if possible. He is just a year back from an achilles injury and he played decent. They cant let our playmaker leave. Best case scenario is draft either AJ hawk or Mike Huff depending on who is available and get another Dominque Byrd in the second. Sign Hope and whatever dlineman they can and go from there. later

You know what, I think I hurt some feelings with my cander and “tell it how it is” approach to this post. I see Dave up there got a little angry. I am probably a bigger niners fan that you are, idiot, so do not throw names around because you may disagree with my opinion. We have over $20 million in cap. Yes, one player is not better than the rest of the team nor does one player make a team. But getting two or three big names does many things:
1. It gives you PROVEN talent (not rookies!)
2. It wil. stock up stadiums! (I go to 4 games a year, this year I plan on only making the Raiders game. What of you Dave? In addition to stadiums being packed, you will also have apparel selling so that penny pinching owner, York, will not have to worry about not getting whatever money he spends back.
3. It will give us a chance to be a playoff team NOW, not later. We have this money, you say do not use any of it? I am not sayoing exhaust it all, but hell make an impact! We are after Gilmore of the dolphins now, and Tod Kollins of the chiefs??? (Tod Kollins is supposed to come in and teach Alex Smith since he is a veteran (he has played 12 of his last 128 games.))
Whether you agree or disagree with me I say what I say cuz thats my opinion. I am still faithful, but this niners legacy is dying fast. As a fan you should demand our team show some signs of assuring its fans it is trying. Instead, we are taking baby steps in our 3RD YEAR OF REBUILDING
Even if we get Peterson back, whats the difference between this year and last year? Our weakness was and forever will be the O-Line. What did we do about that? Bently is gone, Hartwig is gone, Mawae is available but probably too old for Nolan. Do you know the niners do not even have a Center on our roster other than our injury prone Jeremy Newberry? Nothing changed from last year to this year. We will have a runningbacks war between Gore, Hicks, and Barlow (which may sound nice but it won’t be.) You will have Bryant instead of Lloyd, who will probably still struggle with inexperienced Alex. If it were up to me, you get (with the current FA market) you get Aarington, Mawae, Hope, possibly Stephen Neal, and put in transition a trade that would send Barlow and a third round pick for Javon Walker. Again, for you doubters who think this kills cap space, add it up. We will have over 14 million left with the 5 million increase in cap next year.
19 hours after the fact.Don’t like my opinion, thats cool. But it is you, Dave, who is an idiot for being oblivious and stubborn in one position.

I partally agree with MJ.We need to adress and improve the Off. Line.I don´t know if we´ll be able to pick guys like D.B. Ferguson or Winston Justice in the draft but I really like JON RUNYAN (OT,Philadelphia Eagles). He´s a proven, quite efficient vet and I think he could even play guard if necessary, due his characteristics and skills. Oh,he´s 32 ?? Ok,but you really can´t build a solid team without some experienced, qualified ones- even to help the young players development- and remember offensive linemen like Ray Brown (an effient player until last season,at the age of 43) and Bruce Matthews (former Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans).
