No he hasn’t signed yet. This is simply my opinion. But come Thursday/Friday it will be a fact, at least I’m hoping. Who cares that the latest reports on him are that Green Bay is going to throw a buttload of money at him, the Niners will match that offer. Smith is playing this perfectly. He is the top rated MLB in free agency and he’ll use Green Bay or any other team to increase his value. If it comes down to SF & GB. He’ll stay in San Francisco. He is a West Coast guy. Played college ball in Arizona, raised in Utah, and he chose SF five years ago for a reason. Also who would you rather be coached by Winston Moss or Mike Singletary. Don’t think to hard on that one, not to mention the fact he played under Nolan while at Washington. Niners want Smith, and in reality they can’t afford to lose him with Julian Peterson & Andre Carter also free agents. I’ll say it again Derek Smith will remain a 49er when all is said and done.

Quit ruining my hopes and dreams. If for even a moment I can imagine my beloved team with someone with actual POTENTIAL and SKILLS operating at the center of defense I can feel secure. Saying goodbye to Smith would also be saying goodbye to overpursuit, teh antiagility, and a player that can actually create TURNOVERS!

I agree with The Et3rnal Er3ction. To call Smith “mediocre” might be overrating him. He performed better this year thanks to the new scheme that allowed him to flow free to the ball, but imagine someone who can actually HIT in that role.

EE…sorry about ruining your hopes and dreams. But you know he’ll re-sign. The team is in love with the guy. I have no problem with Smith coming back. I’m just not anxious for them to overpay him. Which will happen. Happens every year the Niners overpay a player or two. There is a brightside…Plummer is gone. Wait Kwame is still on the team however…Damn.
