Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat is reporting the Niners might pursue four-time pro bowl cornerback Sam Madison who was recently released by the Miami Dolphins. Maiocco also reports that of the current Niner free agents, deals are expected to be announced for kicker Joe Nedney, and fullback Chris Hetherington. Three of the other free agents may not be so easy to sign. Linebacker Julian Peterson is believed to be seeking a deal that guarantees $20 million. If he receives half that figure from another team, the 49ers are not likely to put up much resistance. Also, linebacker Derek Smith is expected to receive a lucrative offer from the Green Bay Packers when free agency begins. The 49ers would also like to retain defensive end/linebacker Andre Carter, but his asking price has been higher than the 49ers are willing to pay at this point.

I can understand the Whitherspoon pursuit. He’s still in his prime, not an injury laden history, and one I would consider an upgrade over our current LB corps. Madison I do not understand at all. Now if we were (much) closer to being a play off contender, and CB was a hole we needed to upgrade, then yeah I understand the move, but not at this point in the process, makes no sense.

I don’t agree with trying to sign Madison either. Honestly there really isn’t a CB FA out there that really intrigues me.
